Pelvic Ring Rehabilitation

Core Therapeutics Physical Therapy is a community leader in innovative and research-based treatment of pelvic floor weakness and pain. We are integrative in our assessment and treatment of clients with these diagnoses, incorporating the assessment of posture, core strength, biomechanics, as well as back and hip function. We utilize biofeedback-enhanced pelvic floor muscle strengthening and re-education in the clinic, and apply motor learning theory to the rehabilitation of the pelvic floor during static and dynamic activities in order for you to regain this essential control.

Pelvic floor strengthening is a critical intervention for individuals with pelvic ring dysfunction (pain or weakness in the hips, back or pelvis). Performing Kegels while sitting or standing still, however, is an incomplete intervention and must be connected to movement and core strengthening in order for the pelvic floor muscles respond effectively during functional activities.

During your first visit you can expect a thorough history and musculoskeletal evaluation, an opinion as to the amount of PT interventions needed and your likelihood of progress, as well as the fewest visits possible to meet your goals. We want our clients to feel safe and comfortable during their course of treatment and are honored to participate in their healing.

Hip Pain
Pain in the groin, hip or buttock is a common complaint in athletes as well as couch potatoes. A comprehensive evaluation of the spine, pelvis, hips and biomechanics involved is critical to understand and address every component of the dysfunction.

Pre-natal and Post-partum Rehabilitation
Pregnancy and delivery are extraordinary and miraculous work after which women benefit from rehabilitation to regain strength and power in order to take care of their child(ren). Pain in the back, groin or hips is the most common complaint during pregnancy. This often results from tight or weak muscles and their effect on an already mobile pelvis. Physical therapy interventions consist of manual therapy to correct positional misalignment, belts to provide stability, identifying weak muscles and prescribing an exercise program to correct them. Core Therapeutics Physical Therapy specializes in women’s health treatment during this critical time and has innovative and effective methods to enable women to regain strength, reduce pain and improve their daily mobility and fitness. Clinic owner, Elizabeth Hampton PT is a published author and lecturer on core rehabilitation relating to women’s health physical therapy.

Pre- and Post- Surgical Rehabilitation
Many gynecological and colorectal surgeons refer their clients to Core Therapeutics PT for pre- and post-operative rehabilitation. Strengthening the core muscles after treating the sources of pain and weakness are powerful interventions before and after any abdominal or pelvic surgery. Core Therapeutics PT combines research-based interventions in their compassionate and innovative treatment of their clients. Some clients are able to defer or cancel surgeries because of the physical therapy interventions. This level of success is dependant on many medical and musculoskeletal factors. Pre-operative strengthening and education has been shown to reduce anxiety and enable a faster return to appropriate post-operative activities.

Pelvic Pain
This type of pain can have many serious causes, which must be evaluated by a physician. After all diseases have been ruled out, your health care provider can refer you to Core Therapeutics Physical Therapy for treatment. Spasm of the pelvic floor muscles are often one of the causes. Treatment may include biofeedback, pelvic muscle re-education, postural and breathing re-training in order to end the muscle spasm and return to pain free strength. It is essential to integrate the pelvic floor muscles into the strength and movement of the entire body in order for the client to return to optimal function.

Back Pain
Back pain is a complex problem commonly due to weakness, structural defects, joint instability and/or postural habits. Treatment consists of manual therapy, postural re-training, strengthening and flexibility exercises, and learning how to safely carry out your daily activities. Sacroiliac instability is our specialty and we work with your health care provider on stabilizing the pelvis and incorporating innovative strengthening programs. If necessary, other physical therapy modalities such as ultrasound or interferential may be used.

Incontinence and Constipation
Incontinence is the leaking of urine or feces at the wrong time and place. Most often this occurs when pelvic floor muscles are weak, the pelvis unstable or the back painful. Constipation can be caused by dietary choices and dehydration as well as incoordination of the pelvic floor muscles. After evaluation by your health care provider, treatment includes evaluation of these muscles, learning how to strengthen and use them to control the leaking. This is effective for both stress incontinence (leaking with coughing, sneezing or jumping) and urge incontinence (having to go so badly you cannot make it to the toilet.)
